Shonen vs Seinen: What's the Difference?

Ani Recap · 2026-07-31

Shonen and seinen sound similar and often look similar, but they tell you different things about a show's audience and tone.

Shonen

Written for teen boys. Expect friendship, training arcs, hope, and fights that escalate. Naruto, My Hero Academia, and Demon Slayer are shonen.

Seinen

Written for adult men. Darker, bloodier, or more psychologically complex. Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Monster are seinen.

The catch

These are demographics (who a series was marketed to), not quality ratings, and shows blur the line. Attack on Titan ran in a shonen magazine but feels seinen. The label is a hint, not a rule. For the full map of demographics and genres, see our genre guide and the Jargon Decoder.

Whichever you prefer, the story usually goes deeper (and further) in the manga.
